Hey guys,

thought I'd share my experience with extending, or applying for a new German passport
from within Canada.
NOTE: Extending a German passport is NOT possible, you will get a new passport instead. You get to keep
your old one tho, however, it will not be valid anymore once you've been issued a new one.
Don't worry about your work permit or other visa documents in your old passport, they will still be valid and you
can use the old passport, together with the new one to re-enter Canada etc.

It's a super easy, straight forward and quick process. My last application for a new passport
took only 22 days from the day I applied until I had my new passport in my mailbox.

Ok, so here's what you have to do:

1. Go to
http://www.canada.diplo.de/Vertretung/kanada/en/02/passport/passport-adult.html
and download the application form under step #1.

2. Fill out the application form and make sure not to make mistakes on that form.

3. Gather other applicable documents mentioned on the website ( ie. documents of name changes, birth certificates etc )

4. Apply for an appointment at the nearest embassy or consulate:

German Embassy Ottawa: http://www.canada.diplo.de/Vertretung/kanada/en/01/__Ottawa/appointmentottawa.html
German Consulate Toronto: http://www.canada.diplo.de/Vertretung/kanada/en/01/GK__Toronto/appointmenttoronto.html
German Consulate Vancouver: http://www.canada.diplo.de/Vertretung/kanada/en/01/GK__Vancouver/oeffnungszeiten/Seite___C3_96ffnungszeiten.html

5. My application ( September 2013 ) was about $120. Make sure to bring about $140 for applicants over the age of 24 and $105 for applicants under 24.

You get to keep your old passport, but it will be invalidated. I had to keep mine because my current work permit is stapled
into that passport and connected to my 'old' passport number.
I also used my old passport to apply under CEC, now I'll have to inform CIC about the changes.

If you're in the same situation I recommend, to scan the new passport and email a scan, along with your filenumber, name and DoB
to ottpilot-immigration@cic.gc.ca and ask them to update your file.
NOTE: This is only possible if you've already received the AOR.

Hope this helps.

Cheers
