A few questions now that we've mailed our application:

(My wife is Canadian, I'm American)

1. Will we receive a confirmation from the processing center that they received our package and that it has begun processing? or

2. Will we just receive confirmation after the 46 day waiting period?

3. Will that confirmation come through email and snail mail or just email?

4. How long can my wife be out of Canada (visiting me) without jeopardizing the strength of her eligibility as my sponsor?

5. How long can I visit her in Canada while we are waiting for my PR to go through?

6. Is there anything I should know when I cross the border into Canada?

7. Is there anything she should know when she crosses the border into America?

8. Is there anything equivalent to the K-3 U.S. Visa that lets me live and work in Canada sooner rather than later and for a longer period of time?

9. Am I definitely going to have an interview, or will that only be in the case where there's a question of the authenticity of our relationship?

10. Are people finding that the 11 month (+46 days) schedule is pretty accurate?

Thanks!!

jbruce, I can answer a couple of your questions:

1. Will we receive a confirmation from the processing center that they received our package and that it has begun processing? or

CPC-M does not send confirmation of receiving the package. You'll have to rely on the courier's or US Mail for that.

2. Will we just receive confirmation after the 46 day waiting period?

You will receive some form of acknowledgement that your application is in process... see next.

3. Will that confirmation come through email and snail mail or just email?

Some offices do send email notices others rely on snail mail. It's up to the officer reviewing your file which method will be used to communicate.

4. How long can my wife be out of Canada (visiting me) without jeopardizing the strength of her eligibility as my sponsor?

I defer to other more experienced forum members.

5. How long can I visit her in Canada while we are waiting for my PR to go through?

I believe visits should be kept short, but again, other experienced members can answer.

6. Is there anything I should know when I cross the border into Canada?

Same as 4.

7. Is there anything she should know when she crosses the border into America?

Same as 4.

8. Is there anything equivalent to the K-3 U.S. Visa that lets me live and work in Canada sooner rather than later and for a longer period of time?

Same as 4.

9. Am I definitely going to have an interview, or will that only be in the case where there's a question of the authenticity of our relationship?

I believe the decision to conduct an interview is left to the visa officer working your case. If there are no red flags in the application most likely the interview will be waived.

10. Are people finding that the 11 month (+46 days) schedule is pretty accurate?

Depends on the visa office. I believe for Buffalo the times can be shorter

When did you send your application package? If you sent in during the month of July, i can add your info to our spreadsheet where we track each others' progress. Please confirm.

1) I have seen posts that some persons are receiving confirmation emails, but I don't know how widespread that is.
2) This is the most common scenario.
3) Some people get both, or either.
4) Visits are fine, but if it appears she has established residency outside of Canada, she will be asked to submit proof she intends to re-establish in Canada when your PR is approved.
5) For probably the entire time, many American spouses and other visa-exempt spouses have waited the entire period out in Canada.
6) Don't bring a Uhaul with all your possessions, have some proof of your ties to the US, if your spouse can travel with you it's a good idea and let her do the talking, bring proof of your submitted application (copy of receipt e.g.)
7) Ask on the Buffalo thread, I'm not familair with entering the US from Canada.
8 ) The PR is probably the closest thing Canada has to the K-3. With PR you can work, study and live in Canada without need of further permits.
9) Interviews are not mandatory, they are required where the IO has doubts regarding the genuineness of the relationship. A straightforward appplication that is well-supported usually means a waiver of the interview.
10) Yes. In fact, for many couples it can be even shorter than 11 months, I have seen where Feb 2011 and Mar 2011 are receiving PR from Buffalo (3-4 months after sponsor approval).

You're welcome, hope that helped!

A few questions now that we've mailed our application:

(My wife is Canadian, I'm American)

1. Will we receive a confirmation from the processing center that they received our package and that it has begun processing? or

There will be no confirmation that it has been received if u have sent thru registered mail or courier track ur package that way

2. Will we just receive confirmation after the 46 day waiting period?

currently application receieved June 9th are being processed you may or may not get notification as in approval/denial before the 46 day period as CPC-M changes the processing time weekly on wednesday

3. Will that confirmation come through email and snail mail or just email?
If u included an email then they will be corresponding thru email

4. How long can my wife be out of Canada (visiting me) without jeopardizing the strength of her eligibility as my sponsor?
If you are a citizen there is no time limit however u may be asked to show intent to re-establish if you are gone for an extended time, If you are a PR as long as u meet the residency requirement you are good however it is best for PR persons to stay in Canada while doing sponsorship

5. How long can I visit her in Canada while we are waiting for my PR to go through?
As an american you are visa exempt you can stay for 6 mths at a time and extend your visa once you are in your 5th mth of stay

6. Is there anything I should know when I cross the border into Canada?
You may have a hard time getting in as CBSA may feel that you are coming to stay and they may deny you entry based on that, people normally say tell or dont tell that you are being sponsored so read the buffalo outland thread to see how others in your situation get thru what you plan to do

7. Is there anything she should know when she crosses the border into America?
No as long as she is a citizen or a US visa holder she should be ok

8. Is there anything equivalent to the K-3 U.S. Visa that lets me live and work in Canada sooner rather than later and for a longer period of time?
Pr card

9. Am I definitely going to have an interview, or will that only be in the case where there's a question of the authenticity of our relationship?
Interviews based on my reading are normally waived for Americans unless there is great reason for them to doubt which normally there should not as both countries are considered "1st world countries" so you would not be marrying a spouse for PR card which is normally the case when you put a 1st world and 3rd world country together but this is defeated by the amount of proof u include in your application.

10. Are people finding that the 11 month (+46 days) schedule is pretty accurate?
i think people are being finalized in 5-7 mths based on what i looked at in your VO but each case is different so you may be one of the lucky ones

Thanks!!

Since I have some experience with the border crossing I'll tell you my experience, I'm American and I've been to see my wife 5 times now, I've had no issues getting across the border to go and visit her, It was only ever a week or so visit each time though. The next time is to stay until I get approved, if they'll allow me that much time, and I'm hoping I don't have a problem. She's been to visit me once, the first time we hadn't started dating yet so telling the people at the border she was going to visit a friend was nothing to them. but the second time she said she was going to visit her wife while my PR app was being processed, was a very big issue to them, we got pulled aside and had to sit and wait, then she got questioned and denied entry all because we're married and they didn't think she'd return to Canada, they didn't understand that I was applying to live in Canada and why would we pay all that money for me to go there, just for her to come and live in the states illegally. We spent a few good hours at the border for that and she almost got banned from the states for good. so if your wife wants to come visit I suggest she brings good proof that she'll return to Canada. It's much easier to get into Canada than it is to get into the states. good luck.
