Hi All,

Applied in May for study permit due to late decision by college and biometrics completed last week, medical not required. Have one more week to provide study permit to college (impossible) otherwise will have to defer till fall 2020. Even if I was to get my permit by some miracle, I can't start in Aug/Sept due to border travel restrictions and the program is blended, so requires some in person attendance. No choice but to defer till 2021, must be 1000s of other students in my situation?

I have been told if one starts online from abroad and then cannot be in Canada when required for in person classes, he or she will need to withdraw from the program and also lose the fees

Hi, I am in the same situation! I am deferring a year which is Fall 2021 because my program is only September intake. Should I withdraw my current application that I applied in May and reapply for a new application in early 2021?

No, why would you want to withdraw your application if you have already been accepted? You just need to defer, usually at no cost to you, the college should let you do that

You can talk to your college/ university because normally those colleges/universities have no intake in January, are also facilitating the students by deferring them to Jan. You can just start from winter semester.
Don't think that's possible, not heard of any college shifting the program start date if they usually don't have the program running in Winter semester

Not yet, I have until August 24 to pay my tuition. After that, I'll have to defer as well.
I've just done my medical but not biometrics.

My DLI has now deferred my admission to fall 2021 due to not getting study permit in time and the program requiring in person attendance. The new LOA will probably be issued when the next intake opens in October. Should I inform IRCC that I now require study permit for next year? Or let them issue the visa for this year and then get the date amended?

Thats also the question that I have!! Because student has to submit another medical examination after an year which means we have to submit another application. I am debating if I should withdraw current one and apply a new one next year.

I actually asked IRCC webform but the reply wasn’t clear. But here it is:

Thank you for contacting Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

As a study permit holder, you can demonstrate that you are actively pursuing your studies by:

What can I do if I defer my program's start date or if I'm no longer studying?

If you do not actively pursue your studies formore than 150 days, but wish to remain in Canada:

  • Your deferred studies or leave from studies must be approved by your DLI.
  • You can apply as a visitor or a worker,
    • we recommend reading the instruction guide first, it will help you submit a complete application.
  • For more information, we invite you to visit the Assessing study permit conditionspage.

Withdrawl of the application is fine as long they give a refund, don't think they will grant a study permit for next year unless a new LOA is submitted. I'm going to raise a webform to see what they say
