Any way to extend an IEC or change Visa?

Hello there.

My wife has come to Canada on an IEC visa. It started on September 2nd 2013. I don't know if an IEC can be extended. I'm pretty sure that it cannot. However, this is my situation:

We were recently married in January 2014 in Calgary Canada and have not yet applied for a sponsorship. She came as my girlfriend and is now my wife, legally married in Canada. From my understanding as a Canadian citizen I can apply for her to have permanent residence which will allow her to legally stay in Canada for up to two years through a sponsorship program. .

I guess my question is, what other options do I have besides the minimal two year Permanent Residence earned through a sponsorship? Is there any way she can apply for a different visa whilst in Canada? Does she have to go back to Taiwan and apply for another Visa? We don't plan to just stay in the same province for the next two years, as we were thinking about moving to Australia or back to China for a while. We just want to stay for at least another half year or so.

Any suggestions or answers would be excellent. Thanks.

IEC cannot be extended unless it was initially issued for less than the maximum permitted period. This might be, for example, because the passport would expire before the normal IEC limit. Your understanding of the sponsorship process and outcome is incorrect or incomplete.
