Any News on When the Next PGP Lottery Might Open?

Hi everyone,

Just wondering if anyone has heard any updates or has insight into when the Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship (PGP) program might reopen?

We were hoping to sponsor my father, but with the PGP currently closed indefinitely and no recent news, we’re unsure whether we should keep waiting or move forward with a Humanitarian and Compassionate (H&C) application instead.

Does IRCC usually give advance notice before reopening the lottery? And based on previous years, is there any pattern to when it typically opens?

Any info, timelines, or experiences would be greatly appreciated.

It's not going to reopen to new entries this year. We already know that. Yes, IRCC will give advance notice. I would start looking for possible updates either late this year or early next year. The program may or may not reopen to new entries next year.

H&C is in general not the right pathway for parent sponsorship or a way to circumvent PGP and we are seeing parents be refused. If refused H&C then even visiting Canada many no longer possible. I would expect significant reforms to the H&C programs because there is a huge volume of applications but a very small quota. It has become a catch all for anyone who doesn’t have other options to get PR which was not the intent of the program. The program was really created to address exceptional and rare situations. Believe it was going to take 5-7 years to clear the existing applications and that was last fall so only more applications have been added.

Realistically given parent sponsorship is not guaranteed parents need to be looking at options in their home countries while hoping they eventually get PR through PGP.
