Any Canadian restrictions on dual or triple citizenship?

Hello,

Does anyone know whether there are any Canadian (or international) legal restrictions, or whether the Canadian authorities may have a problem with granting citizenship to a child (who has one native born Canadian parent) who already has citizenship in 2 other countries? Neither of the other countries in question have a problem with dual citizenship (the United States and Turkey).

Here are the details I believe are relevant. Our daughter:
- was born to a Canadian mother (born and raised in Canada) and a Turkish father
- was born in the United States and has US citizenship by birth
- is living in Turkey, and has Turkish citizenship through her father

Many thanks,
Sharon

Canada has no restrictions. You should contact the Canadian embassy in Turkey and apply for a citizenship certificate for the child. You can find the forms here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/proof.asp

In this case - which passport to use for travelling purposes? Is it possible to enter Turkey with the Turkish passport and leave Turkey using Canadian?

I can't speak to other countries, but for US/Cdn dual citizens, each border service strongly recommends that citizens enter using the passport of the country they're entering. So my husband and daughter travel with two passports, entering the US as Americans and leaving the US as Canadians.

Thanks all for your prompt replies. Leon: I am going back to Canada for the month of August - I wonder if you happen to know whether it would be better to apply for my daughter's citizenship certification while I am in Canada or just do it from the Canadian Embassy in Turkey? Other than processing times being longer from outside Canada, are there any advantages/disadvantages either way? There is no urgency for us, I just want to get the process started.

Thanks again,
Sharon

The processing time is actually longer in Canada if your daughter is residing outside Canada.

You can see the processing times here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/times/canada/certif-processing.asp

It says applying in Canada, 6 months, applying outside Canada through a visa office add 3 to 4 months but applying in Canada for a child residing outside Canada add 6 to 8 months.

Thanks very much! I somehow missed the different processing times for non-residents applying within Canada when I was looking at the processing times in general. I appreciate the support. :)

Actually, this is the law for the U.S. (you can be prosecuted, in theory), but not for Canada as far as I know.
