Hi, I have a study permit in Canada and I have to go home and take my father to a couple doctors appointments because he has cancer. Would I be allowed to exit and re enter Canada if I have my study permit with me at the airport?

As per IRCC, as a US citizen, you only need your valid passport + study permit + Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). You don’t need an eTA if you’re arriving by land or sea (for example, by car, bus, train or boat). If you received your initial study permit before August 1, 2015, you need to apply for an eTA if you haven’t already done so. If you received your initial study permit on or after August 1, 2015, you already have an eTA automatically issued to you when you were approved. It’s valid for 5 years or until your passport expires. See your letter of introduction for details. Good Luck!

ETA? I have traveled to Canada many times by air as a visitor and I didn’t need an eta. Do I need one now?

You don't need an eTA to re-enter Canada. U.S. citizens are exempt anyway from the eTA requirement and must carry proper identification such as a valid U.S. passport.

You don't need an eTA to re-enter Canada since you already have a valid status in Canada and you are only visiting the United States or St. Pierre and Miquelon. Also, U.S. citizens are exempt anyway from the eTA requirement and must carry proper identification such as a valid U.S. passport.
I also notice it says on the bottom of my study permit in capitals. “THIS DOES NOT AUTHORIZE RE ENTRY”

This means the permit allows you to study in Canada after you have been legally admitted. The permit is not
  • a visa or passport that will allow you entry to Canada, or
  • a guarantee of your re-entry to Canada.
So, don't worry about this statement. Good Luck!
