Hi everyone,
I think I am keeping myself out of trouble but I just wanna confirm if I am really eligible to work on-campus
I obtained my study permit before June 1, 2014. There's a note on my work permit saying "Unless authorized, prohibited from engaging in employment in Canada". I applied and got an amendment titled "confirmation to work off-campus" and I obtained my SIN number based on that.
However there has never been any documents specifically saying that I can work on-campus. Given that I am enrolled full-time in a DLI, I am allowed to work on-campus right? I have been doing that for the past 3 years and this come to my attention when I am applying for study permit extension.

Thanks in advance for the help!
Sam

Could someone please clarify? I requested an eligibility verification for off-campus work back in 2014 and got my SIN from that. Does that also imply I can work on-campus regardless of the statement on my study permit?

Immigration and refugee protection act regulations 186v allow you to work up to 20 hours if you are going to school and work full time if on scheduled academic break if the following describes you.

  • (v) if they are the holder of a study permit and
    • (i) they are a full-time student enrolled at a designated learning institution as defined in section 211.1,

    • (ii) the program in which they are enrolled is a post-secondary academic, vocational or professional training program, or a vocational training program at the secondary level offered in Quebec, in each case, of a duration of six months or more that leads to a degree, diploma or certificate, and

    • (iii) although they are permitted to engage in full-time work during a regularly scheduled break between academic sessions, they work no more than 20 hours per week during a regular academic session;

Thanks for the reply mosor. I am aware of that. I think I am just bugged by "Unless authorized, prohibited from engaging in employment in Canada"... I also see in some places that I need to get an amendment in order to get SIN for on-campus work and idk what this is...

Unless authorized is simply a catch all legal term. The condition would be there even if you had a co-op work permit for your school along with your study permit. Are you authorized to work? According to IRPA you are 20 hours while in school and full time during scheduled breaks. If you work full time during the school year then you are not authorized and violating that condition.

Some of the older study permits had a condition that they may only accept on campus employment and if they are eligible to work off campus with the newer rule changes then they would need the condition amended.

Yes I have a Co-op work permit and I am authorized to work off-campus. I guess I'm okay then. Thanks a lot for the confirmation.
