Hi,

Curious question with a complicated background.
I was born in USA, and located in Hong Kong from age 1-5. I moved to Canada along with my parents at age of 5 and we all became Canadian Citizen.

I don't recall swearing to an oath or anything, am I a naturalized or decent citizen?

You are a naturalized Canadian and you became Canadian as a dependent (Your parents) since you were under age(minor) at that time. Canadian decent is when your parents or grand-parents were already Canadians when you are born. In your case you were naturalized with your parents sponsorship.

Agree that you were naturalized and likely too young to remember either the ceremony or they kept you home (may be it's allowed for such young age for the ceremony).

Children that young definitely do not have to do the oath, and don't believe they'd have to attend the ceremony - but at any rate, quite possible a five year old wouldn't remember anyway.

I do remember seeing very young children at my husband's ceremony few years ago. :) I think it's up to the parents to bring their kids that young to a ceremony or not. :)

Thanks for clarification on the oath taking part.

They do invite children and they can attend, and in fact the citizenship form has an option for younger children to take part in the oath if they/the parents wish to, but it's clear in the form it's not obligatory. I assume they don't even have to attend but not certain.

Anyway I wouldn't expect a five year old to even remember if they did an oath let alone went to some big room with other people with their parents.
