Am I allowed to work on business ideas while in a close work permit

Hello everyone!

I need clarifications on a condition for closed work permits in Canada.

Are we allowed to start business ideas while on a closed work permit?
By that I mean, thinking about a company without registering it or having revenue but do things like prototyping a product (for example create code/software) to be able to commercialize it when I'll be allowed to have a business (if I have my PR).

Hello,

As long as you are not making a profit and are gathering your "ideas" outside your work hours, there is no issue with planning a better future for yourself.

Planning and conceptualizing an idea for a business would be ok but creating a product with coding would be out. Think you would get to the business part pretty quickly.

@canuck78 why coding would be out versus planning ? Because if there's no remuneration and subordination do you think this can still be considered work ?

For example the questions could be reformulate that way, if an artist produce music/paintings/artwork during his free time while on a close permit. In the future when he gets an open permit/permanent residency he decides to sell some of them, do you think that would be considered work before the selling part?

A professional artist would also not be allowed to paint if they had a closed work permit for another job. If they are conceptualizing a painting in their head or talking to others about their painting idea that would be fine. If you are coding and buiilding a product you are working at another job other than your closed WP job.
