hello guys,

I have recently received the offer to commence fall semester in September, but I don't see any possibilities of getting the study permit on time. may I know is it possible to find ways to enter Canada first, then apply for study permit simultaneously?

for example can I apply for tourist permit first, then convert it into study permit after I entered Canada?

TIA!!

You can enter as a visitor if you have a visitor visa (showing funds, ties, travel history, reason to travel) but you cannot convert to a study permit. You still have to apply and it is processed from your home country.

You could certain enter on a TRV. However you can't "convert" a TRV to a study permit. You still need to apply for the study permit through the visa office responsible for your country outside of Canada. So the processing times would be the same as if you applied while in your home country. And you can't start studying until the study permit is approved.

If you are going to enter on a TRV, make sure you have a return ticket.

hey thanks for answering! Just wanna clarify: is it mandatory to have a study permit such that I could attend classes legally? or I could still study like a normal student with tourist visa, while waiting for study visa?

also, will applying two visas simultaneously cause any conflicts? Thanks!!

You need a study permit to study. Without one, it is illegal and schools will ask for proof to enrol.

Yes, it's mandatory. If you start attending classes before your study permit is issued, you will be studying illegally and in violation of your visitor status in Canada.

Would make a lot more sense to defer your admission if you don’t think you will get approval in time. Getting a study permit isn’t guaranteed so would not come to Canada and leave your current employment (if employed) until you know that you’ll be able to study and remain in Canada.
