Hi everyone,

Just spent the last hour reading posts in this forum and there's a lot valuable information. Thanks to all the people who are answering questions and putting their time in to this.

I've read about PNP, Skilled Worker and CEC. I'm at the point where I have to start looking in to this.
Here are my "stats"

2 year diploma completed at a BC College (contemporary music and technology)
Employed for 11 consecutive months.
Employer is a drug store (nation wide company)
Position- the first 8 months sales clerk
-the last 3 months management (assistant manager)

I looked at the NOC occupational structure and found "assistant manager - retail" be in the level 0 Management occupations / 0621 Retail Trade Managers unit group.

Highest level of education is bachelor's degree in communications.. obtained that before working and coming to canada.

My PGWP expires on dec 2012.

and the million dollar question... If I stay with the same company and keep the same position (assistant manager) a year from now, will I be a good candidate for CEC? or I should try to get a work permit from the company and apply for CEC, PNP, or even SKILLED WORKER on 2013?

Thanks in advance

With 2 year studies and 1 year of full time skilled work, you will qualify to apply under CEC.

Do you need an LMO and regular work permit to apply under BC PNP? Have you talked to them? I think you should do that. It is possible that you qualify to apply under PNP right now in which case you might get your PR faster than if you waited now and applied later under CEC.

Hi Leon, thanks for the prompt response.

According to the "BC Provincial Nominee Program" website I don't need a lmo or regular work permit to apply as long as I have a current valid one which is my PGWP. However, they mention that if your work permit expires before receiving a resolution to your PR application, they will issue a work permit support letter to the Nominee which will be submitted to CIC with a new work permit application.

They have a phone number which I called a few days ago but sent me to voicemail. Like you said I should talk to them and ask about the LMO and the process in general.

Now, does it affects my case if my skilled work area is different that what I studied here?
-drugstore retail management vs contemporary music and technology-

Thanks once again

It does not affect your application if you are working in a different field than you studied. Just as long as it is a skilled position.

actually, 9 more months and you will be qualified to apply for CEC, with your assistant manager position. you should apply CEC right after 1 year in your skilled work experience. your work experience must be gained within 2 years of applying.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

My understanding is that when you apply for CEC, you won't get implied statues if your work permit expires before getting a resolution for the CEC application. I was told that my options are to leave the country and come back once I get a positive answer (but that would be quitting my job). And the other option is apply for a work permit through the company, which would require an LMO. Considering the position (assistant manager) I think it would be hard to get a positive LMO.

That's why I'm leaning more in to the PNP, but hey you guys/girls know this better than I do. If there's something I'm missing feel free to point it out.

Thanks for your time

With PNP, you are right that you would not need an LMO to extend the work permit but if you are going from post-grad and being offered a job after that, it is easier to gain an LMO because the employer does not have to advertise the job and prove that he could not find a Canadian. See http://www.hrsdc.gc.ca/eng/workplaceskills/foreign_workers/intstugrad.shtml

Also if you are sponsored through a PNP by your employer, your application hangs on that employer. If you lose the job, your application goes out the window but I suppose if that happens, if you have enough hours already, you could still apply under CEC or if you don't have enough hours but have some post-grad work permit left, you could find another skilled job to fill up the hours.

for me, i would prefer CEC than PNP. yes pnp is faster than cec. but in pnp, the company is sponsoring you, and most of the papers are provided by the employer. since you owe this to your employer doing all these papers sponsoring you, you just don't walk away and look for new employer once you get your pnp approved right? means you will be stucked for a while to your employer even if you want to look for another job. it is a matter of repaying your employer but its not obligation. i know some companies who sponsored foreign workers under pnp, and when they got approved, all of them quit their jobs and looked for another one. after that, the company refuses to sponsor a foreign worker again.. too sad..

under CEC, all you need from your employer is letter of employment. that's it. and you're all good to go.

If it were a good job and a good employer, the employee would have no reason to leave them after getting PR.

Some employers also dangle sponsorship in front of their employees like a carrot, withholding it for a long time, then maybe doing it but always threatening to cancel if if the employee doesn't behave, doing all the overtime they request etc. Employers like that fully expect the employee too leave once he gets his PR.
