Hi,

I will move to Canada next month and I will bring a total of 20,000 CAD in cash. I don’t like to pay fees and would rather carry my own money.

I have 2 questions with the above:
1. When I declare that amount of money, will they ask me questions about its source ?
1.1 What documents can i show to prove that ? Bank statements after withdrawal of money and exchanger receipt ?
1.2 Can they confiscate the money ?

2. I will do flight from Amsterdam, in transit from Toronto to Ottawa. When should I declare the money ? It is only if I leave the airport which is Ottawa ?

Dont fly in with this much money...
Bring in 3-5 K only... open a bank account in Canada and then transfer your money from home country to this bank account.

As long as you declare all cash in your possession 10k CDN or over then you can bring in any amount. This includes declaring all cash any currency where total is 10k or over

1 possibly so be prepared so show source , bank statement, foreign exchange receipt ,no way to predict

1.2 anything is possible but if you declare and are convincing then unlikely just declare all cash you have even if not dollars. There is no limit as long as declared.

2 you will pass through immigration/ customs at Toronto so must declare there given Ottawa will be domestic flight

1. Highly unlikely. 20k is not a big amount. ( Edited after Bs65 pointed out that OP is going as Student and not settler)
1.2. No. If you declare it. If You don't declare it and they find out then money would be confiscated.

2. Toronto

The OP according thread heading is a student but anyway answers still stand, declare it or lose it, or at least be fined for non declaration and worst case be flagged for future secondary inspections .

Do I have to declare the money again on the domestic flight when I will land in Ottawa ?
