After First Stage Approval (in-Canada)

I was wondering how long it takes after first stage approval to get PR.

I'm sponsoring my spouse in-Canada. We received first stage approval at the end of November (2008). In the letter we received with the first stage approval (work permit) my spouse was asked for a police certificate from Thailand. We sent CIC the police certificate in mid-December (2008) to CIC.

So does anyone have a rough idea as to how long the next stage of the whole process is? If not, maybe you can share some of your own experiences.

Thank you very much.

It depends on the local office, if Etobicoke or Mississauga, it could be a year, in some of the other offices a month or two. Take a look at Trackitt, it will give you an idea for in-Canadas. http://www.trackitt.com/canada-immigration-trackers/family-class/

Montreal 7968...I read your first post and you mentioned your spouse getting a police certificate from Thailand..I am waiting for a first stage approval and wonder if I could get a police certificate in advance.

Could you please let me know if you needed any paper from CIC in order to acquire a Police Cert. from Thailand? Also, I assume your spouse didn't do it herself since she has to remain in Canada, but how was it done from here?

Please kindly advise I'm so anxious that I would love to do anything I could at this time to prepare.

Thank you

hi jathupat11

No, you don't need anything from CIC to apply for the Thai Police certificate. I don't know why they tell you to wait on their website. Just call the Thai embassy in Ottawa, and they'll email you an application form. You'll need to get your fingerprints at a police station in Canada. One thing that is annoying is that you need a copy of the 'house certificate' of where ever your spouse is registered in Thailand, this was a little annoying to get, having to call family and get them to search around and then scan and email.

Also, my spouse called the Thai Police office in bangkok and they asked for slightly different info than the embassy in ottawa; the copy of the passport doesn't need to be notorized, just a regular copy, so don't waste your money on a lawyer. The fee for the office is actually free. We sent the application by DHL to office in Bangkok ($50) and included a pre-paid return envelope by fedex ($70) back to us. It takes the courier 3 days one way, and the office in Bangkok takes up to 10 days if I remember correctly. I think the Vancouver and maybe Toronto consulate offer the service but it takes a very long time for them to do.

We got first stage Nov 25, and sent the police certificate Dec 22. Because it takes them forever just to open an envelope and process it, they didn't actually get it until Feb 2 (says on website).

Hope this helps.

One of the longest steps is for CPC (and whoever they contact with to do the checks) to complete the criminality checks. They don't just take the certificate from the country of citizenship/residency and accept it at face value. They do further checks.

So, if they're just getting the check from Thailand, it most likely will still be some time.

For us, it was 5 months from First Stage of Approval (inland) to the date of landing. I think it was so fast because my husband was "known" to immigration because he had been traveling back and forth to Canada for 18 years, doing medicals and criminal checks every time, and also because our local office is so fast in turning over completed applications into landing appointments.
