Hi Everyone,

This is my first post in this forum, I am hoping to gain from the expertise of the members here. I have a very specific situation that it would be nice to get some advice on.

I am currently working in Ontario on a Work Permit (PGWP) valid till 2018. I recently got engaged and will be getting married in a few months. My fiance lives and works in India. I understand my fiance will be eligible for an open work permit for the same duration as mine. However she already possesses a 7 year visitor visa and has visited Canada once.

I am trying to understand if it is possible for my fiance to come to Canada using her visitor visa immediately after marriage and apply for the open work permit from within Canada. Does anyone know if this is allowed?

I also read somewhere that it might be possible for a visitor to apply for a work permit at a Canadian consulate in the USA. Does anyone know if this would be applicable?

Hi,

I know few people who did the same few years back and it worked. Not sure if its still possible. The scenario was, wife got chance into a PhD program, applied for student visa, husband applied for visitor visa. After arrival in Toronto, husband applied and got open work permit.

What I am not sure is how long does it take to get it from within Canada! Hope others can help.
