Additional family form - what happens in cases of no contact with family members

On the form for Additional Family Information it asks for details of brother/sisters and step family etc.

I have not had contact with my step brother and step sister for 10 years and don't even know where they live. How would I show this on the form?
Is there anyone else in a similar family situation and what have they put down on the form?

Do you think the Embassy would expect you to track them down just to get their addresses and marital status?

No, you include the information you have and attach an explanation that you haven't had contact in 10 years. Your parents don't know where they are?

I am curious as to why you would worry about step-siblings? You are only related by marriage, not adoption or by blood so I am curious as why you would worry about this.

I thought the purpose of listing family members on your application was in case you decided to sponsor them after you are living in Canada. So, if you are not planning on sponsoring those family members at a later date to come live in Canada, I would think you do not have to worry about it. Does anyone know why they request you to list your family members besides the sponsorship thing? We do not want to list my husband's parents either because he has not been in contact with them for years.

Hi Jenni-usa,

if you look on the Additional Family Info form, it specifically asks for info on brothers, sisters AND step brothers/sisters. I agree that it doesn't make much sense as you are only related by marriage, but Canada obviously want to capture this info. For families that have a falling out, it can be a real pain if we have to provide this info by tracking down people that we don't want to have contact with, but on the other hand, if we don't put something down on paper, it could come back to haunt us!
