I searched the board for an answer but could not find one, so here goes:

I am an American and my Canadian spouse is sponsoring me. He is only sponsoring me; we do not have any children and I'm not bringing any of my American family members to Canada with me.

I know I need to include "IMM 5406 - Additional Family Information" (cic.gc.ca/english/pdf/kits/forms/IMM5406E.PDF) in my application, but do I need to include info about my mother, father, and siblings? Their birth dates and places of birth, etc. Do I write not applicable in those fields since I am not bringing them?

Sorry if the answer should be obvious and thank you for your help. :)

I made this same mistake! Apparently this form IS needed for EVERY applicant. It is what CIC uses to determine future sponsorship eligibility for your family members. Only the applicant needs to fill it out. Your spouse (sponsor) and other family members (because they are not being sponsored) do NOT need to fill it out. Yes, you want to fill it out completely - parents and sibling information. If you don't have any siblings, then put N/A in that section. If your parents are deceased, note it in that section.

It's the dependant form that isn't needed.

You have to fill out the form with information about all immediate family members. This isn't for people accompanying you, necessarily. It's for CIC to know who in the future you might be eligible to sponsor. If you don't include them on this form then they would be excluded from future sponsorship. If you don't have dependants you don't need to include the dependants form, but the additional family form is mandatory.

I am also from the US and have children who are not part of my PR application. I was advised by our consultant to fill out the dependent part of the application, one of my kids is only 19 and would be allowed to be part of my immigration if he wanted to. My son does not want to come to live in Canada so I was advised to write that in. It asks for the reason a dependent would not be part o the application. I wrote, He chooses to live with his father in the USA. (my son does not really want to keep living with his father, although he does live there, he just does not want to move to Canada where he knows only his mother, step father and step brothers and since in the US he is of age I did not feel I could make him come. He was 18 when we started the process and had just finished high school in a community he had always lived in) Our Consultant did say that if my son thought he might like to be here at all this was a good time to do it since it would be easier for him to be sponsored as my child than any other way in the future. She also had me tell him he only needed to be a resident of Canada 2 of every 5 years. My son could not see a benefit to him so he is not part of our application.
