Hi everyone:
I applied for the PR as a skilled worker two years ago, and I received a month ago my confirmation. Since August, I am temporarily (1 year) living and working in the US for a University in New York State. I need to activate my PR before Jan 2016 and the best way that I could think of to do it would be to drive up to the Thousand Islands Bridge and cross the border there. There are two issues with this:
- I won't be staying in Canada for more than a day after activating my PR (because as I said, I am currently working in the US), but I understand that I can apply for a travel document from CIC while abroad in order to reenter Canada without my PR card.
- What worries me a little is that I would cross the border in a rental car (ENTERPRISE). Will this be a problem at the border? My rental agreement will be only for two days, and I will have documentation proving that I currently reside and work in the US (all of this in order to prove that I am not intending to import that car into Canada). Are there any other problems (&solutions) that you can think of with this? Is it possible for me to drive all the way to the border and activate my PR without having to cross with the vehicle? (I don't mind heading back to the US immediately that same day)
Thanks for your insight on this!
