A Previous Common-Law Relationship? *OUTLAND US TO CA**

Hello There!

I am hoping for a little insight and advice if anybody has been in the same boat.

Through the 'outland' process I am sponsoring my American Husband to Canada.
We are currently in the very early stages of our paperwork and I have come across the part of my application where it is asking me if I was in a previous common-law, and the dates of it.

My confusion here is,
shit...how do I figure out that timeline?
Do I give them the start date as a year after we moved in together to the date that our relationship ended or the date that I moved out? As we rented a house with friends we just slept in separate rooms. Our address was still the same until I was able to move out and find my own place. I met and got involved with my husband, while still living at this address.

and how will my previous common-law effect me as a sponsor?
I was in a long-term with the ex, nearly 5 years vs the pushing 2 that I've been with my husband.

I may be projecting a lot of frustration and worry on an old, dead-end relationship hurting my chances to be with my husband.

Hi

Put the relationship start to end. As long as the relationships don't overlap, there is zero effect on the PR app.

Hi!

I wouldn’t worry about a short time between your previous common-law relationship and your current husband. We had a similar situation where while I had been with my then fiancé for almost 2 years, I hadn’t been able to get a legal divorce from my previous common-law partner. Our officially divorce was finalized in May 2016, and my wife and I were married November of the same year.

So for the dates on the form we filled in a May 2016 as the end of the common-law relationship (although obviously it was over long before that) and then at the end of the app when it asks if there’s anything you’d like to add, we explained when that relationship actually ended, and why I wasn’t able to get a legal divorce until May.

We did not run into any delays or suspicion from them so I think as long as you have all the proof that your current relationship with your husband is legit then they won’t have a problem with it!

Hope this helped and good luck!!

No overlap, but a very short time in between has me biting my nails :(
Why? I was only separated from my husband of 23 years for 10 months when I moved in with my partner. We received his visa with absolutely no problem.
