A few questions regarding my dad's visitor visa

Hi there,

Thanks for taking your time to read this post! I have a few questions regarding my dad's visitor visa.

I have Canada PR, my dad has the regular visitor visa (10 years validity, multiple entries, each stay of maximum 6 months), so here are the questions/doubts:

1. When my dad comes to Canada for the first time, does he have to also purchase the return ticket? Would that help allow hi to enter Canada easier when he's at the airport/custom?

2. When my dad's stay has reached 6 months, can I take him to US, or Mexico for 1-2 weeks, and then re-enter Canada so that he can get another 6 months stay? Or any way he can apply for an extension? (the reason why I am asking is because my dad is visually impaired and there isn't anyone else to take care of him back home so I would like him to stay in Canada with me as much as possible.

The duration of stay allowed in Canada on a tourist visa depends on the person at immigration counter.He can apply for extension within Canada. Try For Super visa for him so that he can stay longer

Generally always best as a visitor be prepared to show a return ticket given length of stay a likely question, no way to predict if asked for or not.

No need to go to the US border given as a visitor no guarantee would be allowed back after such a short exit/return regardless of visa status so follow this process to extend stay http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/extend-stay.asp

As per previous post maybe you should look at a super visa as that supports a 2 year stay each time and is valid for 10 years. With a 2 year stay no need for a return ticket, impossible to buy anyway as airlines only accept bookings about 330 days or so in the future anyway.

Realistically, either with re-entry or extensions, you will find that IRCC or CBSA will suspect your father of living in Canada and is not a genuine tourist and either refuse his entry or his extension. A TRV is not intended to be used to "live" in Canada. Abusing it will ultimately result in it becoming extremely difficult to enter Canada or apply for a new or different visa.
