Hi, so just going through the motions of filling out my application and I have a few questions.

1. When filling out the date I last entered Canada it has from and to, now I am still in Canada so what do I put on the to box? Do I put the date that I sign the form, or do I just leave this blank?

2. Similar to question 1, but in my background declaration do I put my current address or job at the top of the respective box? and if so what to I fill out for the to field?

3. Do most people include a cover letter in the application? If so what do you normally write?

4. In IM1344 it asks the date that I entered the common law relationship, do I write the date that we started living together, or do I write the date that is a year after we started living together i.e the date that we officially became common law for immigration purposes?

5. I am getting 2 statutory declarations from friends and family in Canada and one from my father who lives in Australia. Do the declarations have to be written after we have been together for a year?

6. So with my application I will be including the following:

15 photos with captions explaining when and where they were taken (we don't take a lot of photos unfortunately)
5 letters from friends and family verifying the true and loving nature of our relationship
3 statutory declarations, 2 of which will be done in Canada and one by my Father in Australia
Copies of all bills that have my partners name and this address
Copies of statements from our joint account
Statutory declaration of common law union
Joint lease with me and my partners name on it (although it's a fresh lease as my old landlord lost the lease that my partner was added to last year so when my building was sold it was not transferred to the new owner)
Letters of explanation pertaining to the lease which is freshly signed as my landlord lost my old lease (one from the previous building owner and one from the new owner)
Letter explaining how we met, trips we've been on together, family events we've attended together, plans for the future together etc.
Letter explaining why we think we make a good couple
Declaration that I have severed my previous common law with my ex (ended in 2006)

Is there anything else that I should be adding to strengthen our case? Do you think what I'm providing will be enough?

You can include a table of contents if you want, anything else is just extra and not required.

4. In IM1344 it asks the date that I entered the common law relationship, do I write the date that we started living together, or do I write the date that is a year after we started living together i.e the date that we officially became common law for immigration purposes?
From this: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/guides/3900ETOC.asp

Enter the date (year, month, day) you were married or you entered into your current common-law relationship.

Note: This is the date your status officially changed from being single to common-law, not the date you started living together.

5. I am getting 2 statutory declarations from friends and family in Canada and one from my father who lives in Australia. Do the declarations have to be written after we have been together for a year?
Yes. They have to say that they confirm you have been living together for at least one year - they can't possibly swear to that if you have not yet been living together for one year, that's called perjury. :)

6. So with my application I will be including the following:

15 photos with captions explaining when and where they were taken (we don't take a lot of photos unfortunately)

Letter explaining why we think we make a good couple
Declaration that I have severed my previous common law with my ex (ended in 2006)

Is there anything else that I should be adding to strengthen our case? Do you think what I'm providing will be enough?
Sounds reasonable to me, I think.

Check out the FAQ, which is linked in my signature and which I've linked to on here, it might give you a few other ideas, but generally your application looks good. :)

Ahh thank you so much, I did try searching for a lot of this stuff but I got so many other non relevant things in the search that I wasn't able to find the answers I needed. =)

No problem - that was why I wrote the FAQ. It's geared towards British applicants, but it's otherwise relevant for about 90% of any other application package anyway. :) Hope it helps!

Another question, how long are police checks valid for?

I have read some places saying 3 months and others saying up to 12 months? I have a police check from August last year that I thought I'd be able to use but now I'm doubtful?

Also just found out that I do need to submit a traffic history check from my home country in addition to the police check. I do have one from when I entered the Canada in May of 2013 (and I haven't left the Canada since). I want to send the application of as soon as possible, but I know this traffic history check could take quite a while to get. Would it be advisable to send the application with the most up to date documents I have and write a letter explaining that I've applied for the documents and will send them upon receiving them, or should I just wait to get the originals and delay my application?

The police check can't be older than 3 months when your application arrives at CIC.

This means you need new ones even if you've never been back to the country.

Ah bummer. Ok thanks, I'll have to get the ball rolling on getting them sent out.
