Hi all,

I just picked up a 2005 Kia Sportage in the U.S., to assist with a self-move once my PR is approved. My wife (Canadian) drives a 2006 Kia Sportage.

I was looking on the vehicle import site (http://www.tc.gc.ca/roadsafety/safevehicles/importation/usa/vafus/list2/VAFUS.pdf) to make sure I can bring this in. I assumed I could, as my wife already drives one, albeit a year older than mine.

In 'SECTION 5 - MULTIPURPOSE PASSENGER VEHICLES (MPV) MANUFACTURED BEFORE SEPTEMBER 1, 2007', it states

"All MPV models
manufactured BEFORE
September 1, 2007(except
those listed in the
inadmissible column) that
have been certified by the
original equipment
manufacturer at the time of
the main assembly as
meeting all applicable U.S.
Federal Motor Vehicle
Safety Standards and have
not undergone any alteration
other than typical repair (see
notes)."

The only vehicles shown as INADMISSABLE are "2005 Two-wheel drive GMC Jimmy and Two-wheel drive Chevrolet Blazer models"

Sooo.... I should be okay to import it then?

Please advise!

Thanks!

We imported our 2005 Kia Sorento. If you are the PR then there is no 10k limit so you wont have to pay taxes on the amount over 10k. You will have to pay 204 to have it federally inspected and then whatever cost to have it provincially inspected.

We had to have daytime running lights installed in order to pass the federal inspection.

Thanks heather! I gave you good rep!

I know you aren't asking about it, but will you be able to import it without fees, being you didn't own it for xyz time before?

As to being admissible, definitely is.

My understanding is that a new resident, and a returning resident who has been outside of Canada for more than 5 years, is exempt from the 6 months time limit.

This is what it says for "settlers" http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publications/pub/bsf5114-eng.html#s4

To qualify for duty- and tax-free importation you must have owned, possessed, and used the goods before your arrival in Canada. For further information, consult the publication called Immigrating or Returning to Live in Canada on the CBSA Web site.

I also called the border before I left to make sure that I could bring the fridge, stove, mattresses... and they told me that as a PR (my husband) I could bring all of my stuff without issue.

That was a huge relief to me!

@Pharoh - THank!

Ah, that's great!

I'm claiming everything regardless - except perhaps our one vehicle - because it'd be $70 to get a title in my name (which RIV said had to be to allow me to bring under my goods) and the tax on it, will be around that or less, if we end up paying for it at all.

Interesting... I claimed the car as a returning resident... it is in both our names. Had no issues whatsoever... if the car had been worth more than 10k I would have had to pay the duty on the difference and the IO would have let me wait and have my husband claim it so we wouldnt have had to pay the duty.

This one is currently only in my husbands name - our other vehicle is in both but at the time we bought this one, we just found out we were having twins and decided to just put it under his credit/name expecting me not to work when they were born... so I think that's why. The $70 is to add my name. I even said we'd be there together at the time of bringing it over, and he said, nope - if he does it, he'd pay (like you said, the tax on over 10K - which in this case my calculations make it from 30-80).

Ahhhh.... well 30-80 is much less than getting the titled changed. Especially when you can have it titled in both your names when you register it in Canada!

This is so much more expensive than I ever thought it would be! LOL

Right, and I'm glad he quoted for me what it'd be - I'm not sure I would have clicked with it being comparable or even less. Especially when we have to turn around and pay to register it for $125 straight away in Ontario.

I agree! It's draining, literally Lol

Hi everyone,

One last question, is it possible to make my car a little more Canadian, by getting the speedometer swapped out for one with KPH as the bigger numbers, as opposed to MPH?
