if we look previous years, annual quots is 265000 out of which approx half is other categories like family visa, pnp, etc etc. so 130000 visa less family members focmes out to be nearly 25-30000 applicants. new cap is 20000. thus there is not much difference. am i true? give views!

some say 1000 per occupation. I am not really sure. I hope this is not true. Imagine all the applicants.

if we go by per NOC then 1000 cap may be much limiting.
otherwise totals arel not that different., i.e., 20,000 x 4 family members = 100,000 visas! approx half of 265000 annual quota.
am i true?

My understanding of the cap is like this.

The rule will be applied in the following order:

First: They will check first if the 20,000 cap has been achieved.
Second: If the 20,000 has not been met, then they will process more and check the second limit which is cap per NOC, which is 1000 only.

Example: if they have determined that for that particular Cap year, only 50 applications remaining inorder to met the 20,000, they will process 50 more from those NOC that has not been exhausted the 1000 cap.. Therefore, it is not necesary that all the 29 occupation will reach the 1000 cap.

I understood that it was 20,000 total, so that means there will be 9,000 less positions spread over the 29 NOCS. Which ever ones fill up to 1,000 first will leave fewer available spaces in the remaining NOCS. Am I right?

According to http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/resources/statistics/facts2009/permanent/01.asp there have been about 40,000 skilled workers approved per year but note that that 20,000 quota does not include people who have a job offer (AEO) or people who are still getting in that applied prior to June 26, 2010.

Thank you, Leon, that wasn't quite what I was looking for, but it led me in another direction. (I had hoped for a breakdown by NOC category.) Tell me if I am being too optimistc, but if they took 40,000 FSW1 last year, and they are accepting 20,000 this year, it isn't as bad as I thought it was. Somehow I had it in mind that they were only taking about 10% of previous numbers, but it is actually 50%. That is a relief.

It's not just 50% because people from the old rules are not subjected to the cap nor are people with AEO's so next years numbers could also be 40,000 and the coming years after that.

I have not found a breakdown by NOC but here is a breakdown by occupation, more general: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/resources/statistics/facts2008/permanent/22.asp
This is not just under skilled worker though, it's all PR's.

excellent leon, did a good job. the statas are clear and show the cap 20000 will only reduce the applicants by half. 50% it snotthat panic like 10% as pippin supposed.
thanks.
bye.
