Hi,

me and my wife are both working in Canada (my WP is tied to an employer and my wife has an open WP). I received a job offer from a company which has a 2 year LMO available. If I accept this new job, our plan is to apply for new work permits directly at the border (we are only 2 hrs away).

Is it possible to get the new work permit at the border and then keep working for the 'old' employer for another 2 weeks? (I'm not required to give a legal notice but I want to give my current employer the chance to fill the position before I leave.)

I try to avoid a situation where I quit my job and then have any unforeseen issues with applying for the new work permit.

Thanks!

Hi, there are differing interpretations as to whether one can legally hold/use two work permits concurrently or if issuance of the 2nd permit cancels the 1st one.

Normally it would make sense to get the new WP only when you're ready to start working for the new employer – i.e., wait till after your two-week notice period.

However, if you're concerned that you might quit your current job only to fail getting a WP for the new job for some reason, then you could go with your suggested approach above – get the new WP; if successful, then give notice.

As to whether there's anything wrong with continuing to work for the old employer for a short period of time – I don't know for sure but I would think the risk is low.

I first secured WP and then gave notice period, even CIC agent confirmed that its acceptable. As per agent CIC is just concerned about the fact that you should start with new employer only when you have a WP for them.

Thx for your very fast response amira_mais and anand243244! I'll probably secure the WP first and then give notice to my employer.

Employer had pre-approved unnamed LMO, it took almost 10 days to get it named.
