Hey Everyone,

I got my Canada PR a couple of years ago but wanted to get it for my wife and family and then make the landing. Unfortunately that hasn't been possible because of Covid19 related delays. Any ideas if I might be able to keep my PR status active if my card nears expiration and i haven't been able to land. I do have the PR card(not COPR) and got it a couple of years ago with the genuine intention of settling down in Canada.

Thanks for your help.

you can enter anytime with a valid pr card. To keep your pr status active you need to be in Canada for 2 yrs within a 5 yr rolling time period

The rules remain the same regarding the PR residency obligation and there has been no relaxation to this policy due to COVID. If you want to make sure you can keep your status, you need to make sure you live in Canada for 2 out of every 5 rolling years.

It will be critical that you return to Canada before the expiry of your PR card. If you have been outside of Canada for three or more years by the time you move to Canada, you will then have to live in Canada for two straight years before you will qualify to renew your PR card. This also means that sponsoring your family for PR will not be possible until after you have lived in Canada for the 2 years and meet the residency obligation. This may mean that you need to be prepared to be separated from your family to save your PR status.

You cannot sponsor your family for PR from outside of Canada.
