No you do not have to make an account its online heres the link: https://services3.cic.gc.ca/ecas/security.do You need to put uci or application number and some other info in order to check the current status of your application.

Did you or your wife filled the application or through a counsellor usually they set up email with ircc in case they need extra documents if she did then yes you can link up with your acct if lawyer or immigration counsellor did it(means having a representative) you may not able to link it...
