I believe that if it's your first open work permit application then you have to submit them both together by mail (or you can submit the owp later, but still by mail). I think rules could be different if you have perhaps already had one in the past, or are extending a current work permit.

Yes! It was a painless process. Presented our marriage certificate at YUL on arrival and the border officer informed my wife she could stay for 6 months. We're in quarantine at home now

Currently in the same situation. (haven't yet sent in the spousal sponsorship application, but applied for extension in August). We visited immediate family in the US and flying back to Canada tomorrow. Fingers crossed! Will update if we encounter any issues

I hear you. For that part, she can claim residence in Canada with her employer. But as far as the IRS is concerned, that would not be true until she's officially a permanent resident here.
