Actually, to piggyback on my last reply, does anyone know if crossing the border via "commercial means" includes using a rental car?

IIRC even if your card expires, if you return to Canada by private vehicle and show your expired card they'll let you back in. Your status isn't expired, just the card. (But commercial means of traveling to Canada they require a valid PR card)
