Sorry but that reply doesn't make sense. Although I was paid by my home employer, I was living and working in Canada with a work permit so had to pay Canadian taxes on my worldwide income (as per CRA rules).

I saw an old thread without an answer to this question. Does time spent in Canada as a visiting scholar or professor count towards canadian experience for Express Entry? This was time spent working in Canada, but paid by my home university. I held a valid temporary work permit for the duration.
