No, You Cannot work if your application is rejected and your wp is expired. Were you a PNP candidate? What was the reason for rejection?

Yes. They will send you Actual Nomination Letter via Mail. I believe you have to use that to apply for open work permit. Just upload your letter in documents section if you apply online.

I Agree with Skdubai, Just Follow up Follow Up and Follow-up. I did the same since my WP is expiring in 10 days and that's how I got my AOR and NOM. My Friend applied on Jan 12th He is still waiting for AOR. He is in same situation as me, His WP is expiring on Aug 22nd

You should include that it's with EXPIRING WORK PERMIT.

As per my understanding, if your BOWP workpermit is incomplete than your the time you work during your implied status is considered as void. check CIC website. I am planning to call them on Monday, Plan B is I am planning to hire a consultant to navigate me through this process.
