As an alternative you could fly to the US, pick up a one way rental from U-Haul and drive across the border.

Might be off topic but anyone knows how much notice we're given to appear for test? Is it a week? A month? I plan to go see family but afraid that I won't have enough time to arrange the trip back as well as to satisfy the 2 week quarantine rule. Ideas?

PGWPs are non-extendable non-renewable so your application will be rejected anyways. If you applied for a regular work permit that's another story.

Not true. You will need AOR to apply for open work permit.
