That website says I need one, but http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/helpcentre/answer.asp?qnum=1051&top=16 says it should be included and http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/helpcentre/answer.asp?qnum=494&top=15 implies that it is as well.

It depends on what kind of visa you have. If you have a muti-entry visa you dont need to do anything. If you do not have a multi entry visa, you will need to apply for a new one in Pakistan if you want to return.

I know of university students that will get their study permit at the border, US citizen though.

You should be able to get a study permit at the border as well, as long as there is proof that either of you have a work permit.

Have you heard back from MPNP? If so you may be eligible for an open work permit. Otherwise you will need an new job offer, LMIA, etc. to get a new work permit.

Just a side note, if you are from a visa-waiver country, you could also apply at the border for a new WP. Not sure if this it works when you have an application with CIC
