You will most likely get the "we may ask to to redo, but we may not, we'll be in touch when we review your file" response. That seems to be most common! I would say no harm sending the email, and can be reassuring to get any kind of response from London!

Yeah, by straightforward I mean those case where there are no requests for additional info, interviews etc. All those will naturally slow things down and completely understandable. But for the rest of us there is a level of variability - e.g. why was every other March application processed...
