You can apply for the restoration of status within the 90 days of your application is rejected. Even if they reject your restoration of status application, you literally "buy" about 3 months of time for her stay.

You don't even need to get your application into their office before his visa expires. Getting the post office timestamp before the visa expiration date is good enough :)
