    November 2012 Applicants Unite!

Great news!!! My partner got her passport request today, by email. (We are Canadian and American, applying through the Ottawa office). Hoooray!! It looks from the timelines I've seen like we can expect her actual visa to be issued within the next 30-60 days. Which is amazing and awesome and...

    November 2012 Applicants Unite!

Good news! I just got a letter from CIC, dated Dec 24, that I was approved as a sponsor. So that took a lot longer than the 6 days some people on the spreadsheet seem to have waited (who gets that lucky!?) but at least it happened. I'm relieved. Hope you all get news soon too! S

    November 2012 Applicants Unite!

Hi everyone, I just mailed off our application on Thursday - it is supposed to arrive in Mississauga on November 5th. I don't see another thread yet for November folks so I thought I'd start one! I just returned to Canada (BC) after spending 4 years in California. My partner is still living...

    US outland applicants' thread :)

Hey everyone! I just mailed in our application on Thursday -- it is supposed to arrive on Monday. I was so happy to have it off my hands!! But I just realized, to my horror, that I forgot to write "Sponsorship: Spousal" on the top of the address, when I mailed it. I think everything else is...

Names to use on Application forms, when you are changing your name

Hi everyone, Here's my dilemma, I am hoping someone can give me some advice. So I am Canadian, about to get married to my American sweetie. We are preparing our application for her to come to Canada, which we'll submit soon after we get married. I am leaning strongly towards changing my name...

    Same sex wedding in NYC?

Hi there, I'm pretty sure I know the answer but I want to double check. If my same-sex partner and I get married in New York state (where marriage IS legal), that wedding is acceptable for Canadian immigration purposes, right? Can anyone think of any complication with doing it that way? Any...

How transparent should I be in the application?

That makes me happy to hear. :) My big fear is about living apart for a few months, and how hard that will be. Especially if the application takes longer than I'm hoping! But our relationship is so good, I have to trust that we'll be able to ride it out. I'm glad yours feels worth it too!

How transparent should I be in the application?

I totally agree. And CIC has to know that the reality is that a lot of genuine couples get married for immigration reasons. Which doesn't make them marriages of convenience! But the truth for many is that people get married faster than they might have otherwise. I would certainly rather wait a...

    US outland applicants' thread :)

So can someone tell me... is it that hard for someone waiting for a PR to get a work permit? What does it take? Just an organization that is willing to go through the whole HRSDC hassle thing and sponsor you? Anything else? I take it that's not an easy thing to convince an employer to do...

How transparent should I be in the application?

It's too bad it's true! Ugh! (I mean about the politician...) Yes, it's amazing to me how many people don't know about the marriage discrimination down here. It's really awful! But, it is great that Canada will treat our relationship just the same as any straight relationship. This...

How transparent should I be in the application?

Hi there, So my situation is this: My partner (American) and I (Canadian) have been together for 2 years. We moved in together in January, and just recently got engaged. I have been trying to find a way to stay in the US, so that we could keep living together and pursue our careers for a...

    US outland applicants' thread :)

Yes, she's a US citizen (and I'm a Canadian citizen). She doesn't qualify nicely for any of the NAFTA categories (neither do I, part of why I couldn't stay here in the US!) I am right in thinking that she could also just get a non-NAFTA job offer (subject to the labour board approval thing) and...

Sponsor requirement to be in Canada?

Thank you both!! I am a Canadian citizen, yes. And I do intend to settle in Canada permanently once my fiancee has landed. So that is good to know that I am allowed to leave the country in the meantime! Phew! Thanks for clarifying. I have enough to worry about without that. :)

Sponsor requirement to be in Canada?

Hi everyone, I have a question and I am wondering whether someone knows the answer. I have been living in the US for 4 years. My student visa here is about to expire. My partner and I are going to apply for her PR as my spouse (though we still have to get married, currently we're engaged). My...

can i apply right after wedding reception ?

Glad I found this thread! My same-gender partner and I are planning to apply as spouses, rather than common law, because there are a few things that might complicate a common law relationship (first and foremost the fact that it hasn't been a full calendar year that we've been living together...

    US outland applicants' thread :)

Hello everyone! Just thought I should chime in here with my first post. My partner (same gender) and I are just starting the process of applying for her to get a PR as my spouse. Holy schmoley it's overwhelming! I have been living in the US for 4 years, and was trying to find a way to stay here...
