    March 2024 Inland Spousal Sponsorship

3/31 here and nothing -- checking once in the morning, and once in the evening. I suspect that the security / background checks have been completed for months and I'm waiting on the agent to see a reminder to follow up. Could be wrong. It'd sure be nice to have a little more transparency into...

Traveling While Waiting for Spousal Sponsorship

Yup. As a Canadian I had every right to be at the border with MY stuff (although in most marriages my is really our), but as for husband from a visa exempt country, just wish that there was a way to procure temporary residency as required for the spousal application ahead of Border Day without...

Traveling While Waiting for Spousal Sponsorship

https://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/regulations/SOR-2002-227/page-18.html#h-687616 The law uses the word "cohabit". It just seemed totally reasonable to have an open and honest conversation with a border agent about our intent. I get it, their job is to not admit visitors who intend to...

Traveling While Waiting for Spousal Sponsorship

Fair enough. In my mind, that seems like a stretching of the truth to say the least, which is something I have never done with a border agent. Figured it was best to lay it all out in a one on one conversation with strong evidence of dual intent given the fact that that there's specific...

Traveling While Waiting for Spousal Sponsorship

So what is the process for a visa exempt American spouse to accompany me to live in Canada pending an inland spousal sponsorship application? He needed to apply for temporary residency ahead of that? Under what temporary residency status/program? I perused the spousal inland sponsorship site...

Traveling While Waiting for Spousal Sponsorship

What was the right way to do it? I'm a Canadian and there's an inland process for applying for spousal sponsorship and Americans generally don't need visas to enter Canada. Let's educate folks in a similar situation... We were nothing but pleasant and my husband completely took it in stride...

Traveling While Waiting for Spousal Sponsorship

You're not wrong -- see my previous post about our experience at the border. The agent absolutely dressed us down for saying we intended to Canada to live/work with nothing other than our passports (and paperwork showing that we jointly owned a condo in Canada, etc). She pointed at me (a dual...

Traveling While Waiting for Spousal Sponsorship

For the record, when we moved here we interacted with a border agent who cut us off right after we said "we decided to move to Canada" and gave us a very long and unpleasant lecture about how people don't get to just get to show up at the border and "decide to move to Canada". Once she realized...

Traveling While Waiting for Spousal Sponsorship

Thanks for the detailed response! Still, it’s all so dizzying. Let’s say that he leaves and returns and gets the usual 6 month visitor visa. And when that expires, assuming that PR application is dragging on, would he need to apply for an extension or is he under presumed temporary resident...

Traveling While Waiting for Spousal Sponsorship

If I can ever reach them to confirm, I’ll respond here. Basically, when an American crosses the border s/he usually gets a 6 month visa. If you previously had a 1 or 2 year TRV by applying for extensions pending spousal PR, you revert back to standard 6 months when you re-enter. That’s what one...

Traveling While Waiting for Spousal Sponsorship

My husband is American and in the same boat — hasn’t left Canada since he applied 7 months ago. We didn’t want to jeopardize anything. Also, a border agent said that when they admit you to Canada at a land crossing, whatever status you previously had gets reset. He’s already gone from 6 month...

    March 2024 Inland Spousal Sponsorship

We made a payment We made a payment of $1,165 (which included everything and what the above adds up to) on 3/30 -- it's what they asked for. Did the price go up on 3/31? The AOR shows that we submitted the app on 3/31. Basically, it appears that we paid the fee, but submitted the application...

We worried about this. We paid it upfront because we assumed that paying it later could potentially cause delay or miscommunication debacle. Maybe raise a web inquiry to get someone to open your file?

Us citizen here as a visitor living with my canadian wife w/o a healthcare plan

Hah! Yes! Right about Alberta. Given the things I’ve seen, heard, and experienced in the states, the most right leaning Canadians are socialists. But that’s a serious digression in the context of this forum.

Us citizen here as a visitor living with my canadian wife w/o a healthcare plan

My earlier comments likely were outside the scope of what was typically discussed in these forums, but the OP’s situation and varying criteria from province to province made me think about how much I like Alberta’s no hassle approach to this critical issue, because unlike the US, Canada seems to...

Us citizen here as a visitor living with my canadian wife w/o a healthcare plan

Fair enough! And provinces compete in various ways. Alberta is in hyper growth mode — the others are dealing with the other end of that. in any event, my husband and I are so grateful to be where we are for so many reasons. And I will end by telling OP to get that app in ASAP! It’s a process.

Us citizen here as a visitor living with my canadian wife w/o a healthcare plan

Just surprised. Universal healthcare for anyone with legal status — thought that was the MO pretty much nationwide. Yup. Canadian born mother and 5 generations of grandparents paid into the system and I’m more than paying into it now.
