@orrel71 My friend was unable to reach an agent. The IVR asked to press 0 to transfer to an agent, but then received the response that can't transfer to an agent, try again, and disconnected.

Your passport is your property, so you can ask for them to return it immediately, or legally, you can sue them. I had similar issues with the US Embassy in India - they held onto my passport for a month, but when I demanded it back citing the above, they returned it within 5 days, with visa...
