Hi guys,

I completed a 1 year (3 semester course) from a college in Ontario, and I received a 1 year post graduate work permit. However, some one my classmates received a 1.5 year work permit. So I was wondering if I was supposed to get more than a 1.5 too. We did have classes in the 3rd semester.

1 year program = 1 year PGWP

1.5 PGWP is an exception, not a rule.

Usually PGWP may be only 1 or 3 years.
However, there are lots of different exceptions like 1.5 year or 2years, I even saw 3.5 years after 1 year program.

I spoke to a lawyer and he said that I should have received a 1.5 year work permit. I don't know if I should waste my money re-applying through him.

How many actual months were you in full time education. PGWPs issued for courses less than 2 years may be granted to a time equal the number of months the course ran for.

The duration of program was 1 year. But the lawyer is telling me that PGWP duration is calculated as per academic year and not calendar years. 8 months (2 semesters) = 1 academic year and 12 months (3 semesters) = 1.5 academic years. Maybe I should take a chance and see, because without my extension I wouldn't be able to complete 1 year of CEC.

FYI. I was under 1 year PWGP, same 3 semesters program in College.

You may take your chances for sure, it's your life.

However according to official website it's nothing to do with academic years:
"If you graduate from an eight-month certificate program, you would be eligible for a work permit that is valid for no more than eight months." (c) http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/work-postgrad.asp

Bro in canada 1 academic year is equivalent to 8 months which means 2 semster and if u study for 12 months it means you studied for 3 semster which is equal to 1.5 academic year
Nd its normal to get 1.5 pgwp however speical case is that in which student get 1 pgwp
