Can Spouse Open Work Permit holder travel to Canada before the student?

Hi,

My wife applied for her student visa and I applied my open work permit together with her. We also applied for our 2 children visa. All of us got the visa together.

Now I wish to travel first to Canada and find suitable accommodation for my family so that they can settle down easier as our kids are small.

My question is that is it possible for the SOWP holder to travel first to Canada even before the student has landed there?

Any guidance will be highly appreciated.

Dear @canuck78 ,

Sorry to bother you with another question. My wife has got the student permit for course starting in Sept 2023. And I have got the spouse open work permit. We plan to land in Canada in mid July.

I know my wife cannot start any part time work as a student until her studies start in Sept. However, can I as the spouse own work permit holder, start working once I land in Canada in July, or even I will have to wait till my wife's studies start in Sept and only then can I start a job?

Dear @canuck78 ,
Kindly let me know what you have done when you both got the visa ? Were you able to travel first and found job ? I’m also in the same boat
Your SOWP is tied to spouse’s study permit so study permit holder travels first, and your permit is activated to when spouse starts studies.

So your spouse doesn’t have a study permit In a Masters or PhD program? What does having 12 years of experience have to do with anything? You aren’t going to get an IT job in Canada as so many IT people with Canadian experience and education are out of work. You need admissions, PAL, funds and justify costs of program with career advancement and higher pay when you return home. If your study permit says you can work then you can work up to 24 hours a week. Do not count on PR.

Don’t know ask on another immigration forum. You cannot grab a job. You are a student or spouse is taking Masters and PhD then maybe you will be approved for SOWP.
