Hello. My name is Vlad. I am asking for your advice on emigration. In two months I am coming with my family to Calgary, Alberta. I am coming under the CUAET program and will get a 3 years open work permit. My goal is to get a PR as soon as possible.
I am 36 years old. Married and have a child 8 years old. I am an Aircraft Mechanic with 1.5 years experience in USA. I have certificates and letters of recommendation from Boeing and other reputable companies but no license yet. Also I have a good understanding of construction and can work there but no proven experience. Higher education. English in the process but already not badly speak and well read and understand.

Question: Which profession is easier and quicker for me to get a PR. Continue with aviation or go into construction?

As far as I know Express Entry is now prioritizing construction. But Aircraft Mechanics is more difficult and more rare and valuable profession for the country.

Thank you all very much for your replies.

Trades is a prioritized categories under Express Entry. You can see the priority categories here:

https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/immigrate-canada/express-entry/rounds-invitations/category-based-selection.html

To qualify, you would need to have at least six months of work experience within the last three years in one of the qualifying occupations under the trades category. You can't just work in construction in general, it has to be in one of the specific occupations that qualify.

If you want to apply for EE as an aircraft mechanic, the challenge will be having enough points to be selected. You will lose points due to your age. You haven't said what level of education you have but this will also be a factor (i.e., fewer points if you don't have a master's or phd). Your language abilities will also play into how many points you get - ideally you want to score the maximum to get the most points. Right now EE is extremely competitive. If you are not applying under one of the prioritized categories, you would need to have over 500 points to be selected. Calculate your estimated points and see if this is going to be at all feasible for you.

I'm assuming you are aware that you have to take a language test no matter how you plan to apply for PR.

Realistically you need to prioritize a job that will allow you and your spouse to support your family. Work on your language scores. If you or your spouse know French that would be very beneficial. What is your spouse’s education, age, field of work, language ability, etc.? Would suggest you both work towards pathways to PR to better your chances.

You can check if these if they are aligned with your duties. They are within stem category. But the score is rather high for STEM as well.

As for CUAET, be careful if you are still eligible for a work permit:

You can still travel to Canada using your approved temporary resident visa until it expires.

If you were also approved for an open work permit, you’ll get it when you arrive in Canada, as long as your letter of introduction is valid.

However, because the deadline to enter Canada to benefit from the CUAET measures was March 31, 2024, you

Thanks for posting this. I was looking for this to provide to the OP. OP needs to assess this carefully to determine if they still qualify for the 3 year OWP.

Yup, it's quite a typical situation lately, Ukrainians are moving to Canada from the US as U4U is closing up and due to other reasons.
