PRTD Eligibility while waiting for eCOPR?

Spousal Visa - in Canada applicant

P1: Jan 23
P2: Jan 24
eCOPR: Waiting
PR: Waiting

I have a flight back home to see my family in the US March 17th, which is 2 weeks from today. Obviously my eCOPR (thus my PR card) will not arrive in time.

Am I eligible to apply for a Permanent Resident travel document prior to my eCOPR being uploaded? I completed the virtual landing, but I’m not sure if I am eligible since it seems like I am “in between” right now.

Any insight would be very helpful!

Thank you.

Did you get the eCOPR or not?

I don’t have the eCOPR. I have submitted my picture & address in the portal.

I know technically I am not a permanent resident until the eCOPR is uploaded, so I am not sure what to do for travel in the meantime.

So you misspoke and haven’t done a virtual landing. Are you a US citizen?

Okay, I guess I don’t understand the verbiage. I initiated the virtual landing, I suppose. I am just trying to figure out if I am allowed to re-enter Canada if I leave while in eCOPR limbo. I submitted my picture and address on the portal on after receiving the following email:

Good news! We are ready to finalize your status as a permanent resident in Canada.

This email is to notify you that a new permanent residence confirmation case has been created under your IRCC Permanent Residence Portal account.

To complete the above you will be asked to:

  • Sign in with your existing details to the PR Portal;
  • Confirm that you are currently residing in Canada;
  • Provide your current mailing address in Canada so that we can mail you your permanent resident card;
  • Upload a photo in a digital format that will be used for your permanent resident card.
You have seven (7) days from the date of this email to confirm you’re in Canada, provide your mailing address in Canada and submit your PR card photo

Once you submit your information, it will be reviewed by IRCC.

  • An IRCC case worker will send you a message if further information is required; the message will come from an email address ending in @cic.gc.ca. To avoid missing our emails, check your junk or spam folder.
  • When your information is approved by IRCC, your PR card will be printed and mailed to you.
For additional information on using the PR Portal to confirm your status as a permanent resident and receive your PR card, consult our website.

Thank you,

As a US citizen you can just travel using your passport. The PR card requirement is not required for US citizens to enter Canada. You also haven’t landed yet. IRCC was ensuring you are in Canada so you qualify for the eCOPR.

Sorry for redundancy in my questions. I am concerned about being let back into Canada with just my US Passport. Will airport border patrol be able to see that I am a PR applicant?

Just be honest and you should be fine. There is a good chance you will not even be questioned as a US citizen.
