RO and Child Tax Benefit

Hi all,

Could you advise if I can apply for Child Tax Benefit even though I haven't met the RO? It's been nearly a year since we re-entered and have been reluctant about applying so as not to get flagged. My first child is a landed PR while my last was born outside of Canada. I have been wondering if it is okay to apply for the first only and then apply for the last after we have met the RO.

Thanks,

You can apply to both. We didn't meet the RO when we entered and applied (got paid) for whatever benefit we were eligible for. We are now already in compliance and have our PR cards renewed without any problems.

Applying for Child benefit doesn't lead to interaction with IRCC, just CRA.

Oh wow! Thanks. Good to know. Do you know if they can back date it to when we started residing?

CRA usually back-calculates and sends a lump-sum payment the first time for whatever time you are eligible for. Then, it becomes monthly. You should be able to see those details in your MyCra account once they process it.

How much out of RO were you when you entered Canada? Were you let in? Which airport?

I had only stayed two weeks, so way off. I was let in and was told IRCC may contact me.
Wow you got very lucky. Assume you know you can’t sponsor your child until you are compliant with your RO. If it’s been a year pretty sure you are out of the woods with IRCC. Would make sure you are compliant in the future since IRCC isn’t likely to let people off a second time.

Sure, I am staying put till I am compliant. When I am compliant then I will apply for my last child.
