Hi all,
long-term means long period of time (in medical when this term is used, usually means 1 year )
Permanent from other side means to exist indefinitely or perpetually; everlasting
and these 2 words are intrinsically different
Answer is TRUE ,why?

it doesn't talk about long-term , it's said permanent !technically, these 2 words have different meaning!

permanent is not changing and persisting for long time (likely forever). long term means persisting for long time. They both infer same thing. So true is correct answer.

long time
But opposite is possible, long-term not permanent !
like symptoms of high-usage(over dose) of zinc as an example or supplement X would be nausea and vomiting but they are not permanent and reversible; means, recoverable.
So, I believe , from my point of view, the text isn't talking about length but also the result(result==permanent, not possible to recover).

Still thanks for your response and YES answer is True.

From my side, during the exam, decision should be made quickly and asap, analysis and probing different side's of possibility may not be possible, this was upper-intermediate and could be said tough Academic Reading passage, still I got high grade, but 2-3 T F NG were incorrect and believe that sometimes not very straightforward questions.

Well think in this way : Over use of zinc will cause temporary/short term symptoms but no long term damage/permanent damage.
Marriage is long term / permanent relationship.
I am applying for long term / permanent residence authorization.
He is having a Temporary / short term visa.

"long term" and permanent are taken as similar meaning. permanent is long term (possibly forever).

These are not black and white but dark grey and off white kind of difference.

Besides in your question. The passage has the term "permanent damage". so that implies long term damage. I mean if someone's brain is damaged permanently it is damaged for long term and possibly forever.

The reason why "permanent" and "long term" are somewhat taken synonymously is because it hard to predict future.
