Eligibility interview

Hello everybody,

I have a question regarding the eligibility interview for asylum seeker. I heard that people who applied during 2020, it took them months before they schedule them an interview, and I want to know if it is still the same or things now are getting better?

Also, was the reason for the delay because refugee applicants needed to give their biometric, and since the biometric centres were close or limited, it caused the delay for the eligibility interview or that is not the only reason? I mean if someone received a student visa recently and he/she is able to travel to canada at the moment, and since he/she already gave biometric and did the medical when applying for the visa, will they be able to get their eligibility interview faster when they apply inland? Or that doesn’t matter and they still have to wait a long time before the interview?

thanks

Usually people wait 1 to 2 years for an interview.

No - the delay is not due to biometrics centres being closed. Wait time were already like this pre-COVID.

Thank you for your reply.

what if someone claim asylum at the airport when they first arrive, will they have their eligibility interview at the airport? Or still not guaranteed?

You are still going to have to wait for the interview. The process is the same regardless of the method of application.

No - eligibility interviews are not held when you first arrive at the airport. You will need to wait for the interview to be scheduled after you submit your asylum claim. It's the same regardless of whether you claim asylum at the border or at the airport.
