And variants will keep coming here anyhow because of so called essential travellers who don't have to quarantine at all. Who knows, maybe it's them who brought those variants here.

Since pandemic started some people have been fined for breaking quarantine rules no more than 1000 despite government threats of 750 000 and 6 months in jail. But this is different. You are not breaking any rules. You just had to travel abroad to care for a sick relative, for example. Now you come back and you want to quarantine at home. Why would you agree to pay for 3 days hotel quarantine when you have a place to quarantine properly. Just ignore their stupid rules and quarantine at home. Even police understand this and say they are not going to arrest anyone because of this. Because they know this is stupid.
Not sure I would be willing to test their ' stupid rules ' unless you want to become a test-case?
I know some that had to travel to care for a sick relative and now left with a $1800. hotel bill whereas they could have easily quarantined at home and been in contact with the local public health authority. If you have all the necessary information after receiving a covid test at the airport then why not? I can understand the need to deter travel to prevent the spread of covid variants but I think this category is low risk unlike some areas of essential workers.
What happens if your family member can't afford the quarantine hotel and needs to take care of a sick relative?

Well, the government issued the directive that airlines are not to deny boarding to people who don't have their hotels pre-booked.

I imagine, then, that you could go to customs and be all like "can't afford the hotel" and throw your hands in the air when they pressure you on it, until they put you in one of the free ones from before.

Dunno if it will work, but that would be the reason why one might prevent people from boarding without the hotel registration. Backtracking on this just another lunacy in a long history of lunacies, so nothing surprises me anymore.

Test them if you want to, the fines levied to the are by the local authorities. the local health board has the right to follow up on people and assess further fines if they think it is appropriate for non compliance.

If truckers start doing quarantine then whole country supply chain will be stopped
It will only stop for 14 days until the first batch are gone thru LOL
Anyways its really stupid to think that air travellers are the only ones bringing in variants, when truckers travel all across the United States and into Canada and can get infected anywhere along the way....but hey its easier to just pick on air travel cause its "non essential"....

Interesting idea and maybe the free one comes with drinks, better food, and 20 min. escorted walks in the courtyard?

Few days ago at YVR the entire flight from Asia was exempted from the 3-day hotel quarantine due to
the authority deciding the flight was already in the air when the new rules went into effect. Wonder which
time zone they were using? Lots of smiley faces after landing and hope they were all able to get their money
back from the " rip-off " hotels.

You do realize that they crisscross the country. Although only around 70% reliable soon essential workers will be getting rapid tests at the border.

Going home and not going to the quarantine hotel is breaking the public health rules. They aren't going to arrest someone. Mosst have been tallked to and have reassessed their plan. Others have received their first fine with another fine likely on its way. The people who falsified their covid tests eeach got fines of 10K and 7K. Canada is treating people these issues quite seriously. Not sure how someone will argue their refusal to go to a quarantine hotel. Plenty of people who have their own home who are following the public health rules.

Deliberately falsifying tests is a completely different story and is stupid. No, most travelers are upset and angry about it , maybe except those who have lots of spare cash and don't mind it and perhaps some dumb once who believe it will help not to spread the virus better than quarantine at home or some other rented place.
