Actually, even with the vaccine you can catch covid and you can be an asymptomatic carrier. Therefore, widespread quarantine and self-isolation will be in place until probably 70-80% of the population is vaccinated. I don't know when this will ever happen when so many people don't want it.
At the end of the day - whether we think the cost is ridiculous or what not - this has 100% been enforced to stop people from traveling internationally. This was not a secret by the government. This was enacted to make it costly for someone to go on a trip to deter them from going in the first place. Do I think they've thought it through completely, no. But, what can we do at this point and hope this whole nightmare ends soon because most of us cannot deal with this another year. The whole covid situation has been one big blunder after another and the governments should already have plans in place for this sort of situation. There was no question a pandemic was coming, heck we even talked about this in high school - there's a pandemic about every 100 years.
The post you are quoting has direct statistics. You are 95% less likely to catch covid than an unvaccinated person (so 1/20), and the rate of assymptomatic carriers was 0.1% (1/1000).
Don't just repeat stuff you read elsewhere. Just because people repeat it, doesn't make it true.
Self-isolation is fine. Quarantine is fine.
This three day mickey-mouse quarantine is both prohibitively expensive and ineffective. That's not fine.
It's a three-day hold until you get a test, and there's not any details out on it yet, probably because they realized that Trudeau's half-assed announcement was not good.
The hold pending test is not a bad idea in and of itself, given the fact that people are literally selling fraudulent testing certificates at global airports, and people returning (or entering) Canada have proven a fantastic ability to ignore the quarantine requirements and do things like host parties at home once they've arrived.
I agree with people saying that charging $2k to do a three-day hold pending test results is costly and the cost is concerning, but again, there's no published details, and given that the government continues to not publish details, I anticipate there are a lot of people in Ottawa panicking about how to implement a program designed to deal with the lowest common denominators (COVIDiots) and not unduly harm everyone else.
At the end of the day what I believe or you believe, matters not. The government will make their decisions on these stats, so that's all we have to go.
We could ask the same...why these strict hotel quarantines when less than 2% of covid cases are from international travel? This has even been shared by the prime minister.
So again, they will do whatever it makes them look like they are doing everything to "protect the public" even if it makes no sense to us. As Canadians...that's what we do...obey like good children. That's the difference between American and Canadian citizens. We put all our trust in our "faithful leaders."

I am highly concerned about these fraudulent tests being sold at airports. That is irresponsible beyond belief.
Being treated like a COVIDIOT and a snowbird when I've dutifully self-isolated for a year is frustrating beyond my ability to express it. I am stuck abroad with my spouse and a newborn waiting for PR to go through so I don't abandon my spouse and child without health insurance or income in the middle of a global pandemic. My family has not seen their granddaughter, and likely won't until she's nearly a year old. I have not interacted socially with a soul other than my spouse since July, when restrictions had eased, and that was the only time I had since March. And now the prospect of an extra unbudgeted 6K+ (if it is truly per person) is turning what seemed to be relief at the end of a long ordeal into more just another abyss of despair.
This is the problem with the selfish culture we're in the middle of - you can't design a public policy around COVID thinking about people complying, you have to assume that people haven't complied, and then you end up penalizing people who have. I've worked from home since March 2020 because of the risks; don't see friends or family; etc etc but I also know that I'm making all these sacrifices and the idiots around us who aren't are the ones that cause the government to crack down like this.
There are so many what-ifs here: what if a test could be entirely reliable, could you skip quarantine? Well no, the tests aren't reliable. What if we didn't charge people for the hotels? Well, then people would see it as a "free" way to go to Mexico for a quick vacation. How would they do that if we cancelled all Canadian carriers flights to Mexico and the Caribbean? Well, the US airlines operating out of Vancouver are flying to Mexico now, with a quick stop in LA or Chicago.
All throughout the pandemic the government has horrified me with their "announce first figure out the details later" strategy of things like this. The goals are good, the intentions are good - but it's ridiculous to make life-changing announcements like "you need to pay $2k for three days for a test" and then not provide details for weeks. One obvious outcome is that people are scrambling now to book flights and get back to Canada before the policy is written - causing a rush of people who may well be COVID positive back into the country who will then ignore the testing regime.
It's all stupid, we're the ones complying, we're sacrificing ourselves for the idiots who think that masks are a satanic cult. But you can't design public policy thinking about the most responsible, sophisticated people. You have to think about the lowest common denominator.
They have been extending COPR deadlines since at least April of 2020 if you are unable to travel.
International travellers *themselves* are less than 2% of cases. That means that of each flight that comes to Canada - say a 300-person Boeing 777ER; six people on that flight are positive.
They then come home and ignore quarantine requirements, go shopping wearing masks around their chins, and tell people that staying 2 meters apart is a cult. Those people then infect 2-3 people each. Then the people the travellers infected go on to host 100-person parties in penthouses in Vancouver, or go to school and teach classes of 30 students who, for some reason, are not required to wear masks. They each infect 2-3 people...
That's why it's a problem. The South Africa and UK variants that are blasting Alberta right now didn't come from someone who hadn't travelled.
There is poor information and transparency on this but they are extending coprs without additional medicals.

One possibility would be to waive the fees for people travelling for non-discretionary reasons. That way it would only apply to people travelling for discretionary reasons.
I could easily show my work visa and termination letter to show that my travel home is non-optional. People popping in Mexico for a vacation could not.
