You need to show liquid/readily available amount via GIC for the first year + 1 year upfront tuition fee payment. In addition, you would need to show via proofs how you intend to pay for the second year expenses (remaining tuition and living expense).

Generally you need to show only first year expenses for sds category. So, 10k is enough.
Yes, showing less than the minimum 10k will be rejected. But showing only 10k does not guarantee that your application will be accepted. In addition to the minimum, you have to also show you can support yourself during your temporary stay in Canada.

Because you still need to show that you can support yourself while in Canada. Canada is a very expensive place to live in. You can't possibly think that anyone would believe that you only need $10k to live in Canada.
so you are saying 10k$ isnt enough for a year? lol

That's bare minimum. Also, what he's trying to say is make sure visa officer doesn't think that you will struggle financially while being in Canada. There will still be money that you have access to or your sponsor does for the second year of study. Trust me, financials for second year of study is a hidden requirement.

Which means I should try and show 20K in GIC for my personal expenses? If I keep college fees aside + 20K GIC ---> will it be considered as sufficient funds to survive in Canada or do i need to show more?

Thanks for your response!

So requirement is to show first year of expenses via 10k in GIC and upfront first year tuition fee payment AND to show proofs on how you intend to pay for the rest of the duration. So for the later part (2nd year), you can show any sort of evidence including your/your sponsors bank statements with amount for second year expenses and that amount is for you via a affidavit of support. You may also choose to pay 2 year tuition fee + 20k GIC and trust me, you aren't going to be rejected on financial grounds whatsoever.

In addition, it's a good practice to declare the source of funds.
