Hey @desi_me_rollin - I tried to get an appointment and filled up the form. Got a call from Service Canada the next day and they told me to apply online saying that the Service Canada centers are open but new SIN applications are being accepted only online/via mail. I will be curious to know how is your experience tomorrow. Please keep us posted.
Sorry about the late reply. As I mentioned earlier, I was able to get an appointment. Turns out the the ServiceCanada is now also accepting walkins but its limited to 5 people at a time.

I was asked if it was urgent at ServiceCanada and I said kinda since I am waiting for paperwork to be finished before starting a job. She said that is a good enough reason and let me through to an agent, who then issued me my SIN.

The person at the main desk did reject a lot of people whose case was not urgent. It appears if you have a job ready, then they will issue you one. If you do not, then go back to online application it seems.

No, she did not check if my job offer/thing was actually true.

I submitted an appointment request through https://eservices.canada.ca/en/service/
Just ticked "require appointment" and "information" next to SIN and explained my situation in the message. They called me back 2 days later and booked me in.
Pls advise the document presented in person.

I have copr and passport and mailed bank statement.
COPR AND PASSPORT are counted as primary doc and a separate doc is needed for identity proof.

Are they asking for a valid secondary document to confirm your identity

I submitted a request in the eservices site and received a call. The agent just told me which centers are open in GTA and did not set any appointment.

I reached the center in Kilpling avenue at 08:00 AM and saw that there was a big line up already in front of the office which opened at 08:30 AM. I reached my turn after about 5 hours in the line and got my SIN in 10 mins at the counter.

They are only providing SIN to people who are already working or have job offers. I would advise those visiting the center for SIN to be prepared for long lines and carry water/cap/umbrella/chairs to make their wait comfortable.

Thanks for replying! How do you know that they are only accepting people with valid job offers?
There are security agents at the Service Canada office who will inform you that only candidates who have job offers will be allowed to get the SIN in person.
Also the agent at the counter will ask you if you have a job offer. They did not ask for proofs though.

I would recommend anyone who does not have a job and hence do not need the SIN urgently to apply for SIN online. It is easier to do it online than having to wait 4-5 hours in a line under the sun.

I got my SIN number today during an in-person appointment. It was rough because I had to wait in line for 2 hours to get it. There were lots of people there. The agent asked if I had a job offer and informed me that they only accept people that need their SIN urgently. I recommend that you guys apply online unless you need it quick. The only documents that they asked me to present were my passport and COPR.

Has anyone used the mail from the bank -- essentially the first mail when they send you your card -- as POA for SIN or OHIP?
SIN POA requirement seems a bit more relaxed than OHIP:

-- SIN --
"a letter or document from a financial institution (bank statement, credit card statement, mortgage contract or statement, etc.)"
----

-- OHIP --
"
monthly mailed bank account statements for savings or chequing accounts
* does not include receipts, bank books, letters or automated teller receipts
"
----

It's weird that bank 'letters' are not accepted for OHIP - whatever they might mean by 'letters'..

Hi everyone,

I want to let you all know that I have received my SIN number in the post - in the UK. It took precisely 14 days from the date I applied online. So as per the online guide and form, there is no reason not to apply from abroad using the online system. So it seems to be a good, common sense way of doing things.

All the best.

I live in Montreal, and went this morning to the downtown office at 9:15 am. I was out at 10:45 with a new SIN permit. You wait inside the building, and it's generally speaking an easy process.

It took me 10 minutes to get it once I was assigned an agent. Pretty easy process.

I had been waiting for my SIN renewal since June 10 through my online application.

Good morning everyone, I have a new job offer and renewed work permit but expired sin. I need to renew my SIN ASAP. I called and have been told to apply online which I did yesterday, However the wait is about 20 business days and that is too long! Is there any service canada open in Hamilton or GTA that accepts walk in?

Hi All,

I landed two days back and now I am in quarantine for 14 days at an inn. To apply for SIN online, I need address proof? I am staying temporarily here at the inn and planning to book airbnb room for sometime. How do I get the proof of address? Do I necessarily need to get an apartment on lease?

Please suggest.

Do you have a friend or relative who could give you a copy of their rental agreement to you? It doesn’t necessarily have to contain your name on it.
