I guess this is the question everyone has right now.

Yeagh the Canadian government has issued a statement saying they will not reduce the time we spent studying online when we apply for PGWP, given we have completed at least 50% of the course in Canada. This is good.

But But the burning question, What will happen if we can't complete at least 50% of the course in Canada ?, is it going to be like we have done a very expensive (very very) online course ?

Are we gonna get any refund ?

I feel they will for sure amend their policies..things will be pretty clear in the next 3 months.. the Canadian govt is very supportive towards its international students so I feel they will consider that too... but, if by January the classes begin in campus n yet the international flights would not operate then that would definitely haunt us during our work permit application

Yeagh.

Also for me my college has completely moved to online delivery (conestoga 2020 fall and 2021 winter, 8 months graduate certificate ) so I wonder how they'd take that into consideration

Agree, this is beneficial for student with longer duration of study. Using AIP we can start studying online while waiting for final decision. If your course is 2yrs and 50% online and your visa got refused, you will still have 1yr of PGWP provided that you will secure SP for the remaining of 50% that need to be in-person study.

It is also worth noting that if you finished 50% online, you will have a higher chance of getting your SP approved as you only need 50% funding as proof of funds. It will also support your application that your sole purpose is studying in Canada

I am also waiting for my college official confirmation that the credit i gained under AIP on online studies will be honored even if i my final visa subsequently got refused.

But But the burning question, What will happen if we can't complete at least 50% of the course in Canada ?, is it going to be like we have done a very expensive (very very) online course ?

For us to get a diploma, maximum 50% allowed online and the remaining 50% in-person. AIP for online and SP required for in-person study. SP is required for us to legally enter and study in Canada. Without SP we will not be able to finish the remaining 50% in-person class hence no diploma and pgwp. If we reached maximum allowed online study we will be forced to pause our studies until we secure a SP and study inside Canada. Securing an SP will be easier when you're halfway finishing your program.

I got confirmation for my college that slots for next years semester will be given to students who deferred this year. Therefore it is not advisable to change school and program next year. Competition will also be higher as US IS will surely crossover Canada due to Trumps policy.

Are we gonna get any refund ?

You can refund before classes begin. No refund during or after online classes as your tuition will be used to facilitate your online class. Maybe if you can return the knowledge you gained after online class the college might give a refund:rolleyes:. If the college allows refund after online class you might consider looking for another school, as refund after studies is not financially sustainable for the college and they might go bankruptcy.

AIP is to keep IS tied in colleges/uni and issuance of final approval give IRRC control over IS entering Canada.
For now Canada wants to keep IS to support their education system while keeping us out by not issuing final approval that leads to SP.

Canada spend billions to fight COVID and they’re doing a great job, cases are low and controlled, they want to keep it that way. Allowing IS from all over the world specially from highly infected countries will put their fight in vain, hence they will keep outsider out until it is safe to do so. Canada cannot afford another lockdown.

Canada is slowly and cautiously restarting their economy. Canadians lost their jobs and the government is supporting them thru emergency funding. They will not allow IS to compete with Canadians in securing scarce job availability.
Canadians commented negatively in IRCC tweet for IS. They think that the government is doing nothing about spousal sponsorship. IS gives more financial gain and sponsored spouses may be additional borden to canadian spouse and add to unemployment. Spouses might also bring the infection in Canada after seeing their partner as for sure no social distancing will happen:p

US/Canada border opening is a good indication that Canada is ready to open globally. US/Canada is tied politically and economically. They are ally and neighbors. Opening canadian border internationally while keeping US/Canada border shut will be an insult to US and will have negative impact to Canada.

Winter is as flu season in Canada, it will be harder for health professional to determine if a person is infected of common flu or Covid. Winter starts at January. Canada is preparing for 2nd wave and allowing immigrants to arrive during winter is not a good idea unless early next year we have effective vaccine.

Knowing what is happening inside Canada and the measures they put in place to fight covid will give IS idea when we will be welcome again to come to Canada. Looking into a bigger picture will set our expectation right. Sorry for this long reply. This is just my opinion and I'm not a visa expert. Cheers and good luck to all IS!!

Hello @Zyqwerty ,

Thank you for posting your thoughts.

I'm asking about refund is because, if they pushed us to do 100% of the course without allowing us to enter Canada, there will be a mismatch between what was promised and what we will be getting eventually. The promise was to deliver some quality Canadian education with Canada living experience for a considerably big amount of money right ? (we are still ok to pay that amount because the promised experience is soo good), But what we actually gonna get is a online course , for the same amount $$. There are so many online courses for cheap price If I want to study some online courses. I know this is what it is given the situation , but if we are to compromise the quality of education because of this online delivery method, What I'm saying is, they should also consider giving some relief to the students.

P.S : All those concerns are only if we have to stay out of Canada for the full duration of the course.

Refund is actually on your school decision. As a student, IRCC is giving you prerogative to start studying online while waiting for SP. As far as i know there is no announcement yet that it will become 100% online outside Canada. It is true there are cheaper course online but those program will not give you canadian diploma and pgwp eligibility

If I had to study for a canadian diploma 100% online and outside of canada, I don't see any difference. also I won't be able to apply for pgwp.

Fingers crossed, hoping for the best. Let's see how this goes

IRCC has to come up with a plan for how and when they are going to open borders to international students to finish other 50% of course in Canada. Because I don't think 50% is enough especially with these coronavirus uncertainties.

Yeagh exactly. They can not just say things are uncertain and so on. They should also give some options for worst case scenarios, not just for the best case scenarios.

They will not discourage IS studying Canada coz their educational system is highly dependent to IS.

Right now IS has 3 options.

*Defer to 2022 or beyond
*Look for other country allowing in-person studies
*Start studying online until border opens

Canada is developing its own contact tracing app. If its working fine they might slowly allow IS coming. They cannot keep that border close as it is also hurting their economy.

I think they will incorporate covid testing in admissibility stage. Coz person with contagious decease is considered inadmissible.
Maybe they will issue final decision on virus free countries.

Exactly - in all probability, my University will have online classes for the Jan - April term as well.

So that means 8 months online - September 2020 till April 2021.

I have the study permit approved before March 18, 2020.

But I just verified by calling CBSA. They said online courses means I WILL NOT be allowed entry and that online classes makes my entry NON ESSENTIAL.

So if the same scenario with Covid persists and a vaccine is not available before Jan (which most likely is the case) , then I'll have online classes till April 2021.

According to CBSA's current statement, they won't allow me entry into the country even in Jan as I'll still have online courses.

So thus may cause the 50% limit to exceed - I may have to do more than 50% from home as online is considered non essential.

Then what? They need to clear this up as this is a life changing decision for so many if us.

Actually my motivation for studying in canada is the PGWP, without that i have no idea how to proceed
Also deferring sounds so painful

Is there anyone got confirmation from school that credit while studying on AIP will be accepted even if refusal is the final decision?
