Hello,

I got accepted to University of Manitoba (UoM) to study a MSc in engineering in Jan 2021 (Winter term) but my first choice is University of Alberta (UoA), which I am still waiting for the admission decision. University of Alberta master’s degree will start this Sep 2020 (Fall term)
Note: my passport expires in Sep 2021

So now, to save myself some time I want to apply for a visa by the Manitoba’s offer letter right now. But I will study in Alberta if they accepted me. So I have the following questions if you can help me with :

1- Cause UoM program start in Jan 2021, could they delay the visa application process if I applied for the visa now as it’s early to apply for it ? I mean if it typically takes 5 weeks to receive the visa, would this duration be increased ? And if I apply for UoA (might receive an offer letter in late April or early May) will I obtain the visa quicker as the the program will start in a couple of months ?

2- If I applied for the visa with the UoM offer letter, can I study in UoA ?

3- What is the validity period of both the study permit and temporary visa ? noting that my passport expires in Sep 2021

4- Is the student visa/ temporary residence a single entry visa or multiple entry ?

5- If my student permit or student visa expired while still studying, I will apply for an extension. During the extension time, can I travel to my home country for a holiday for example and return to Canada to continue my studies ?

Excuse me for the long post, but due to the coronavirus I am a bit nervous about the whole process.
Thanks all

most importantly just renew your passport then apply with the LOA you already have . You can switch schools when you enter Canada

So you mean that my passport should be valid throughout the program duration to receive the study permit/ visa ? Can’t I renew it in Canada and apply for an extension for my study permit ?

You can extend not renew visa. Yes, passport must be valid for entire period

Passport doesn’t have to be valid for the entire period. It does become a pain.
Thanks, the problem is that I cannot renew my passport cause my country’s embassy won’t renew any passports that have more than 6 months validity cause of the coronavirus. So I have no choice but to use the current passport for the study permit application. So according to you it’s ok.
Also, is there an email or a contact link where I can ask my questions to the IRCC ?

1. There will be delays but related to covid 19. I would wait and see if you get an offer from U of A soon before applying for a study permit. You can always change your program online once you have your permit and have entered. Think U of A should be sending their 1st round of acceptances soon so you might as well wait for up to a month and then reassess.
2. You would need to change your school online Once you landed or change the school online before you entered Canada and then get your study permit school changed. It would be much easier to start off with U of A study permit.

3. maximum validity is the length of your passport so Sept 2021
4. Multiple entry TRV.
5. You should be applying 5-6 months before your study permit expires. Once you will have implied status so you can keep studying if your permit expires. If your stufy permit expires and you are stuck waiting months for an extension it can create a domino effect of various other issues. You need a valid a TRV to get back into Canada. That doesn’t take months to renew if you need to.
6.

Customer service is unreliable and not available on the phone. May take a while to get a response via webform. Would read through the various pages of application information. Would encourage you to wait for the U of A admission. Processing has already become very slow so best to apply for the program you want.
